photographer Bettina Meister photo workshop Morocco

photo workshop Master Class Morocco round trip

Experience Morocco up close in 14 days.

On this photo tour you will see everything Morocco has to offer: cities, mountains, sea and desert.

Starting in Marrakech, you will travel to Morocco's northern cultural metropolises: Casablanca, Rabat and Fès, a UNSECO World Heritage Site. You will experience a mixture of medieval charm and the lifestyle of a modern, North African society. Our route then takes us southwards over the Atlas Mountains to southern Morocco. The Sahara desert with its large sand dunes impresses in Merzouga. In Zagora you will feel the tranquillity of southern Morocco and after the south the Atlantic coast with the sea beckons. Maritime flair and freshly caught fish contrast with the desert in Essaouira before returning to Marrakech.

The special thing about this photo tour, in which you will learn everything about travel photography, is the proximity to the culture, the deep insight into Morocco's everyday life and the close contact with the locals.

Day 1 - Arrival day in Marrakech and Djamaa-El-Fna

We meet in the afternoon in one of the pretty riads in the heart of the old town (old medina) of the royal city of Marrakech. After getting to know each other, we will walk through the winding alleyways of Marrakech to Djamaa-El-Fna Square. The square is bustling with life in the evenings and is a great place to take photos from one of the rooftop terraces at sunset. We will have dinner on Djamaa El Fna Square.

Day 2 - From Marrakech via Casablanca to the capital Rabat

From Marrakech, we travel to the global metropolis of Casablanca. Morocco's largest city is located by the sea. We will photograph one of the largest mosques in the world, the Hassan II Mosque. We continue to Rabat. The capital of Morocco is the next royal city on our journey and we will explore the medieval medina with more than just our cameras.

Day 3 - From Rabat to the cultural centre of Fès

We stay in Rabat in the morning to take photos of the empty alleyways and the cityscape. After breakfast, we drive to Fès, the oldest of Morocco's four royal cities. The city is a UNSECO World Heritage Site. Its medina is impressive and offers plenty of photo opportunities from the Arabian Nights.

Day 4 - Fès

We stay in Fès for another day to drift through the alleyways and everyday life of the Moroccans with our cameras. The winding alleyways and monumental buildings of Fès offer contrasting photo opportunities. A visit to the leather tannery will challenge your photographic skills, depending on the lighting conditions.

Day 5 - Fès (UNESCO World Heritage Site) and drive to Ifrane

Our journey takes us over the Middle Atlas Mountains to Ifrane. On the way, the plateau spreads out before us as a photo motif for the vast landscape. We will hopefully also have the opportunity to meet and photograph the locals there. On the way today, we will be accompanied by further motifs for our landscape photography. We arrive in Ifrane in the evening.

Day 6 - From Ifrane to Merzouga

We continue our journey to southern Morocco in the Sahara. The landscape on the long journey is impressive and offers us a wide variety of photo opportunities. On the way, we will focus on wildlife photography for a change as we try to find the monkeys at a favourite stopping point.

The journey continues via Rissani, where we stop (either today or on the way back) to capture the lively life of the Moroccans in photographs and possibly practise pulling along before arriving at our desert hotel at night.

Day 7 - Sahara

After sunrise with a view of the dunes, we visit a Gnaoua camp, where you can experience the musicians live and photograph them performing just a few songs (as in concert photography on big stages). In the afternoon, we ride dromedaries into the sand dunes. It's a challenge for photographers to take pictures while riding. We enjoy the sunset in the middle of the dunes and spend the night in one of the permanently installed desert camps. The silence of the desert is impressive and the starry sky at night brings you back to yourself. Photo opportunities here are a dime a dozen.

Day 8 - From Merzouga to Zagora

In the morning we hike up to some higher dunes, because walking in the sand is something special and you should definitely try it - not to mention the view. Our route then takes us by car via the Draa Valley to Zagora, one of the largest palm cities on the edge of the Sahara Desert.

Day 9 - Zagora and Tamegroute, the cultural centre of the south

After the palm groves, we explore the old Amezrou Kasbah in Zagora. It is a real insider tip and almost only locals know about it. When we visit the local museum of the cooperative, there are many wonderful antiques to photograph that symbolise the culture of southern Morocco. This private collection is not open to the public. If you don't know the museum, you won't find it and won't be allowed in. In Tamegroute, we visit the traditional pottery, where green and yellow glazed pottery is made by hand. Here you can practise creating a photo reportage. If there is still time, we go to the library, where handwritten books and writings on the subjects of maths, astronomy, biology and history can be seen. We spend another night in a small desert camp.

Day 10 - From Tamegroute to Taliouine

In the morning, the dune offers a wonderful photo opportunity. On our long journey towards the sea, we drive to Taznakht. The town is famous for its carpets. In a women's co-operative, you can photograph how the women weave carpets at breakneck speed without a design template. Our day ends in the oasis town of Taliouine. The Berber village in the middle of a barren, boulder-like hilly landscape offers a peaceful atmosphere in a green oasis.

Day 11 - From Taliouine to Taghazout on the Atlantic Ocean

We head to Taghazout on the Atlantic coast. The tranquil village is a real insider tip among surfers and so it is not surprising that the hippie culture has found its way there. The beautiful beach with its blue and white fishing boats is a popular photo motif.

Day 12 - From Taghazout to Essaouira

In the morning, the sea with its wonderful colours and haze once again offers itself as a photo motif before we set off for Essaouira. On the way, we hope to see and photograph goats on the argan trees. Essaouira is a pretty town by the sea, famous for its fishermen. The bustling harbour is legendary and offers numerous photo opportunities with its freshly caught fish and fishermen. We photograph the sunset by the sea.

Day 13 - From Essaouira to Marrakech

We take a leisurely drive back to Marrakech. On the way, we visit an argan oil cooperative where you can take photos of the women at work. We spend the last night in Marrakech so that everyone can catch their flight home on time the next morning.

Day 14 - Departure day

We say goodbye after breakfast, as today is your return flight day. If you still have time before your flight, you can use your own time to put what you have learnt into practice on your own. But please don't get lost in the alleyways, because your flight is not waiting for you.

The schedule and programme may change depending on the weather and local conditions.

We act flexibly in order to provide participants with the best photo opportunities on the routes and to stop at the most important and most beautiful photo spots.

We have long journeys on the tour and often only arrive at the hotel in the evening or at night. On the long journeys we try to stop at sunsets to photograph the landscape.

Please read the details of the workshop programme before registering. You can find them here.
